History of Cally Estate
The Murray Arms has been long established as a focal point of the Cally Estate. Apart from a brief period last century, since being built in 1760, it has always been owned by the Murray family and their descendants. This remains true today.
The Cally Estate is a small privately owned Scottish country estate. As well as the Murray Arms, the Estate includes Sandgreen Caravan Park, which over looks the Fleet Bay two miles south of Gatehouse of Fleet. To the north of the town in the heart of the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area lies the Estate's agricultural interests. The farms extend to over 4,500 acres and covers some of the most idyllic scenery from the heather hills in the north to the lush pastures and woodlands in the southern valley floor.
Managing all aspects of the Estate in today's economic climate is an on going balancing act. Our priority is to try and establish a sustainable business with the conservation and enhancement of the environment as one of our top priorities. Sandgreen Caravan Park , has recently been awarded a gold award under the David Bellamy Conservation Award scheme.
Murrayton Farms have adopted a management system which works with nature; our cows are bred from native breeds, our sheep are native Scottish Blackfaces and our lambs and calves are born in the spring and have the opportunity to spend most of their lives with us grazing on grass. While the health of our livestock is paramount, we use the minimum amount of medication.
Our farming system is assessed annually and we are proud to be members of the Quality Meat Scotland Assurance Scheme. For over twelve years we have been actively involved in environmental enhancement schemes; the farms lie in an Environmentally Sensitive Area and we have had the opportunity to work with partners under the Rural Stewardship Scheme.
We also work closely with the Galloway Fisheries Trust on an ongoing habitat enhancement and fish regeneration project along the length of the river Fleet.
